Information used

After you tap Start recording and grant precise location permission, Car GPS Log records coordinates, times and altitude to show routes, distance, duration and speed. Android uses the GNSS constellations available to the device and system settings, which may include GPS and BeiDou; the app cannot select or guarantee one constellation alone. The user-started foreground service continues when the screen is off or another app is open, with a recording notification. Stop it in the app or notification. The app does not start tracking automatically on device boot.

You can separately enable Automatic drive detection. It reads location and speed only while the Trips home screen is visible: recording starts after about 10 seconds of sustained driving, a short stop such as a traffic light remains part of the same trip, and the trip stops and saves after about five minutes stationary or when you leave that screen. It does not require an XPENG, other car Bluetooth or OBD connection and cannot start itself from the background.

Trip titles, endpoint names, imported GPX data and complete GPS logs remain on your phone by default. Videos are generated and stored on your phone. Only if you separately enable Mac sync are completed-activity GPX files, precise coordinates, times, trip names and endpoint names uploaded over HTTPS to cargpslog.com. We do not sell trip or location data.

Mac GPX sync (optional)

Sync is off by default. When enabled, Android creates a one-time network job only when an activity is saved, imported or edited; Android delays and retries failed work rather than polling continuously. The Mac app checks only when you press Sync GPX. The server partitions data using a random private sync code and stores it outside the public website directory. Anyone with the code can retrieve the associated GPX files, so keep it private. Disabling stops new uploads but does not automatically delete existing server copies; contact support to request deletion. Dashcam video is never uploaded by this feature.

Dashcam (Preview build)

Version 1.9.4 uses an on-device Hong Kong bilingual road-name dictionary derived from Transport Department Road Network (2nd Generation), DATA.GOV.HK. Intellectual property belongs to the HKSAR Government and Transport Department. English names without an unambiguous official Chinese match are hidden; translation sends no additional coordinates. From 1.9.3, while Dashcam is open or recording, current coordinates are periodically sent to the device's Android Geocoder provider to request road names in Traditional Chinese (Hong Kong). New raw clips save available names alongside GPS timestamps; names are added to the map only when you later make a separate overlay copy. Unavailable or stale names are hidden. Lookups are rate-limited and do not upload video or the complete GPS journal. Results may be delayed, inaccurate or in another language. This is not navigation guidance.

From 1.9.13 Preview, while Dashcam is open or recording in mainland China, the app periodically sends the current single coordinate to the AMap Search SDK to request a Chinese road and administrative district. It does not send the video or complete GPS track for this lookup. Display positions are smoothed on-device while original fixes remain in the clip's GPS journal. The provider is Beijing AutoNavi Tuxiang Technology Co., Ltd. AMap may process the coordinate, IP/network, device and app information, SDK identifiers and service diagnostics to deliver and secure the service. See the AMap Open Platform Privacy Policy. This test key is limited to small-volume Preview testing; a separate production key and any required commercial authorization are needed before public release.

From 1.9.1, each dashcam recording also saves a separate local GPS history (precise coordinates, timestamps and available altitude) for the library route preview, route-animation videos and GPX export. Missing tracks are not invented for old videos. Deleting a clip also removes its local GPS history, overlay copy and cached route animation; exported, gallery and shared copies must be deleted separately. GPS histories and original dashcam clips are excluded from Android cloud backup and device transfer.

With your consent and camera/precise-location permissions, Dashcam first saves raw 1080p road video and a timestamped GPS history without burning a map into the camera stream. Later, Make overlay video in Videos creates a separate MP4 with map, GPS coordinates, speed, distance and local date/time; the raw clip is not overwritten. Microphone capture is off by default and requires a separate opt-in and permission. After you explicitly start recording in the Dashcam screen, a foreground service continues camera, GPS and opted-in microphone capture when switching apps or locking, with a recording notification. Stop and save in Dashcam or its notification. Volume up starts and volume down stops only while Dashcam is visible. Camera capture never starts automatically at boot or from a background trigger. Ordinary background GPS trip recording is unaffected. Clips are limited to 30 minutes or 2 GB.

Dashcam videos remain in private app storage on your phone. They are not uploaded to our servers and are excluded from Android cloud backup and device transfer. Use Save a copy in the video library to back them up; clearing app data or uninstalling deletes in-app clips. Shared/exported video may contain faces, number plates, ambient audio and precise locations; check your right to share it. The bottom-right road map uses OpenStreetMap, subject to the network and attribution disclosures below.

Maps, place searches and third-party services

The app is not entirely offline. Google Maps SDK requests maps from Google. Google Places SDK sends your place search text and request information to Google. The Android Geocoder looks up start and finish names using their coordinates; its provider depends on your device. Location recording uses the Google Play services fused location provider and is affected by your device location settings.

Google Maps and Places SDKs can also process IP addresses, device/app version information, SDK identifiers, request and interaction data, performance data and crash diagnostics to deliver, maintain and improve their services. These practices are governed by the Google Privacy Policy.

Shareable video road maps use OpenStreetMap. Tile downloads disclose your IP address, app identification and requested tile areas to OpenStreetMap and its delivery providers; areas may reveal approximate trip locations. Files, sharing and backups

The current Beta is free and allows unlimited activities. It contains no in-app checkout or Google Play Billing SDK and does not process purchases or collect payment details. Optional Mac GPX sync is currently free; any future charge will be disclosed before use.

The app reads only GPX files you select through the system file picker. Videos may be copied automatically to your gallery; gallery cloud backup depends on your gallery service and settings. Exporting or sharing provides the selected file to the app, storage service or recipients you choose. Files can contain precise locations, times and trip names. Check for private addresses before sharing.

Android system backup is enabled for this app. Depending on device settings, app data may be backed up by your system backup provider or transferred to a new phone. This is not developer-operated cloud sync.

Retention, deletion and security

Trips remain until you delete them. Delete on the home screen removes that trip's GPS records and related in-app videos. Exported files, gallery copies and recipients' copies must be deleted separately. Place names and maps may be cached in private app storage. Android Clear storage removes all local app data and caches. Manage backup copies with your backup provider.

Private app data is protected by Android application isolation. Direct map network requests use HTTPS. Device geocoding, location, Google and AMap SDKs, and backup providers govern their own processing and retention. We cannot delete copies from your device or third-party services on your behalf.

Support and your choices

You can revoke location permission in Android settings at any time to prevent new GPS recording. Support emails, sender addresses and attachments are processed through Google Groups so we can answer and follow up on requests. Do not send passwords or unnecessary sensitive trip details. Contact [email protected] with privacy questions or requests to delete support data we hold. We retain support correspondence only to handle requests and for necessary legal or security reasons.

Use and map terms

Car GPS Log is a driving log and replay tool, not live navigation or a safety instrument. Operate it only when safely parked, and record/share only information you are entitled to use. Google map features are subject to the Google Terms of Service and Google Maps Additional Terms. OpenStreetMap data is provided by its contributors under the OpenStreetMap copyright and licence terms. Keep map attribution on exported videos.
